Independence and the Writer in Latin America

%20%20Latin%20American%20literature%20has%20become%20a%20source%20of%20fascination%20for%20the%20world%20since%20the%20mid-20th%20century%2C%20but%20many%20of%20the%20issues%20that%20writers%20have%20addressed%20in%20their%20work%20have%20their%20roots%20in%20the%20colonial%20legacy%20and%20in%20the%20particular%20circumstances%20of%20independence.%20This%20lecture%20will%20examine%20the%20historical%20context%20of%20independence%20and%20its%20aftermath%2C%20and%20provide%20an%20overview%20of%20how%20this%20has%20shaped%20the%20development%20of%20the%20literature%20of%20the%20continent.%0D%0AEdwin%20Williamson%20is%20the%20King%20Alfonso%20XIII%20Professor%20of%20Spanish%20Studies%20at%20the%20University%20of%20Oxford.%20His%20books%20include%20Borges%3A%20A%20Life%20%28Penguin%2C%202004%29%2C%20which%20has%20been%20translated%20into%20several%20languages%2C%20including%20Spanish%20%28Seix%20Barral%2C%202007%29%2C%20and%20The%20Penguin%20History%20of%20Latin%20America%2C%20which%20has%20recently%20been%20published%20in%20a%20new%20edition%20updated%20to%202009.
